I really can’t complain about this rave review. All I can say is I wish I had a picture of my father that evokes half the laughs the guy on the cover of Assisted Loving does. He is the grandfather of my dear friend Gillian Laub, a great photographer – www.gillianlaub.com. And he has the same vitality (and questionable manners) in eating that sandwich as my father did. The man on the cover of my book could have been any of the sociable, sensational senior men flapping around my father’s Palm Beach paradise all winter. And what I love about him is that he evokes a response from the younger people I want to attract to my book. They’re the ones who need to have a sense of humor about aging parents. Maybe the man on my cover isn’t subtle, but he’s lovable with an instantly recognizable joie de vivre on his face. I’ll keep him!

It was lovely talking to Terry Gross on Fresh Air about Assisted Loving in late May, when the book came out. She responded to my true tales about my Dad deeply – and said my relationship with my father reminded her of her relationship with hers. Her questions, so aptly put and so carefully based on what I worked so hard to write – made me well up in the studio. I have never been to therapy, but this was perilously close. She was so well prepared, so willing to explore the dark corners of the guilt and selfishness we all feel about our parents. How could I not be a little ferklempt? From the response to the show, I could tell I hit a nerve. What is it like to learn to both love your father and like him in his later years? How do you face the fact that he isn’t young anymore, and yet he still wants love in his 80s? In this short-order, sound-bite-crazy culture, Terry Gross is a national hero and a great friend to new authors. She is the quiet voice of care and intention we all wish we could hear from parents, siblings, teachers, neighbors and friends all the time. Here’s the clip of Assisted Loving and Fresh Air – check out the entire episode here.

We were talking sex at the Burbank Senior Artists Colony on Friday, a fantastic residence of talented people unafraid to face aging square in the eye and have a good laugh about it all. One couple, married 50 years reported an unseemly incident – they were going at it one day with their middle aged son visiting. Later he told them he could hear everything. “So what?” 78 year old father said. It does make you wonder why we’re all so squeamish around parents being romantic. Isn’t it nice to know they still feel sexy in their later years? Here’s a news clip from CBS news that day.
